How it works

  1. Check the status

Enter your address. We combine the rules of every agency that covers it, so you get one answer, the reason for it, and your fire agency's contact.

  2. Register your burn

If burning is allowed, register the day you plan to burn. Your fire agency then knows where to find you if someone reports smoke.

  3. Check in on the day

Before you light, check in. We confirm burning is still allowed at that moment. When the fire is out, tell us it is out.

Why check first

  • One answer for your address

Fire districts, state forestry and air-quality agencies can all have rules for the same place. If any of them says no, the answer is no.

  • Rules change during the day

Agencies can close burning at any time because of wind, dry weather or smoke. A registration is not permission; the status when you light is what counts.

  • In your pocket

The BeforeYouBurn app shows the status where you stand, lets you register and check in, and can notify you when burning closes.

Who sets the rules

Your local fire agency and the other agencies that cover your address set the burning rules. BeforeYouBurn shows them in one place. We never open or close burning ourselves. When we cannot confirm a status, we say "Unknown" and tell you which agency to call, rather than guess.

Always free for residents

There is no fee and no subscription to check the status or register a burn. Some agencies charge for their own burn permits; that fee goes to the agency.
